Palm Sunday
Worship Belongs to Jesus
Palm Sunday is the day where we look to Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. This was the beginning of the last days of Jesus life on the earth. This was the start of what Jesus had made clear to his disciples about what was going to happen to him, and in-turn in us. In Mark 16:21 it says:
“From that time on, Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.”
Jesus, gave his life, so that we can have life. All the broken things about us are washed clean with the blood of Jesus. And it is because of this that we worship him. We worship him because he is worthy and we were created to worship him.
Colossians 1:15-20
“The Son (speaking of Jesus) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.”
We Worship Because He is Worthy
He is worthy, because of who he is, and because of what he has done. God is worthy to be praised. In Revelation 4 we get a window into the throne room of heaven:
In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back. The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle.
“‘Holy, holy, holy
is the Lord God Almighty,’
who was, and is, and is to come.”
Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say:
You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.”
Heaven is filled with these crazy looking creatures that were made for one reason and one reason only, and it was to worship. That is why they are covered in eyes, so that there whole being takes in the glory of God. We worship because he is worthy, We worship him because of who he is, we worship him because of all he has done, we worship him because without him there is no air the breath, no flower to stop and see, and there is no grace for our failures and short comings.
We worship him because we were created to worship
Romans 1:25 says: They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.
The question for us is NOT if we will worship, the question is what are we worshiping? Sometimes we get more focused on a style of worship than to the God that we are called to focus on. Passionate, surrendered worship is not a style or denomination. Passionate, surrendered worship is what we are made to do. Because we were made to worship almighty God with all that is in us. And that looks many different ways, but they all feel the same. The posture of our heart is what is most important.
The bible gives us some insight into how to worship. It gives us a picture of what passionate surrendered worship looks in Psalm 150:
Praise the Lord.
There are actually 7 different words in the Hebrew language for praise, because worshiping who God is, is to much for just one word.
Hallal - to praise, shine, boast, rave, celebrate, be noisily foolish (root of Hallelujah)
Yada - to worship with lifted hands
Towdah - to extend hands in adoration
Shabach - to shout, be loud, triumph
Barak - to kneel down, bless God in adoration
Zamar - to play instruments, sing praises
Tehillah - to sing
By boasting about him, celebrating him, shouting with victory to him, kneeling down in adoration of him, raising our hands in surrender to him, and singing a new song to him, we give him our praise, our worship, and most importantly our hearts.
