Doing What He Tells Us: Overcoming Hurdles in Our Walk with God
In our journey of faith, we often find ourselves longing to be closer to Jesus and to live out the life and story that He has for us. However, we can sometimes feel stuck or disconnected, struggling to maintain a vibrant and connected walk with God. Today, we will explore three common hurdles that can hinder our obedience to Jesus and how we can overcome them.
Hurdle 1
Believing the lie that we can't hear Jesus. One of the first hurdles we face is the belief that we cannot hear Jesus or that His voice is not relevant to our lives. However, Jesus Himself assures us that His sheep know His voice (John 10:27).
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:27
We have the promise that as His followers, we can hear His voice through His Word and the leading of the Holy Spirit. By spending time in the Word and seeking His voice, we can break free from this lie and experience a deeper connection with Jesus.
Hurdle 2
Resisting Obedience Due to Difficulty or Confusion. Another hurdle we encounter is the resistance to obeying Jesus when His instructions seem difficult or confusing. We may question His wisdom or doubt our ability to carry out His commands. However, Jesus calls us to do whatever He tells us (John 2:5), even when it doesn't make sense or feels challenging.
His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” John 2:5
It is in these moments of obedience that we get to be a part of His story and experience His miraculous work in and through us.
Hurdle 3
Struggling with Shame and Feeling Unworthy. Shame can be a significant hurdle in our walk with God. We may feel unworthy or disqualified from being used by Him due to our past mistakes or current struggles. However, Jesus came to offer forgiveness and grace to all who believe in Him. Through His sacrifice, we are washed clean and invited into a new covenant of forgiveness and mercy. By accepting His forgiveness and letting go of shame, we can step into the fullness of our calling and be wrapped up in the story of God.
Overcoming these hurdles requires a willingness to believe that we can hear Jesus, a commitment to obey His instructions, and a surrendering of shame and unworthiness. As we do what He tells us, we will experience a deeper connection with Jesus, be a part of His miraculous work, and walk in the fullness of our calling. Let us embrace the invitation to do whatever He tells us and live a life that reflects His love and grace to the world around us.
